The faces of Games

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen , I am Yang Yongqiang, a graduate student from Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I am very glad to be here today to share with you the topic of the year of 2008.

Nothing brings the people of the world together in peace, love and friendship like the Olympic Games. As 2008 draws near, Chinese people feel excited at the grand event. Today, I want to focus on the importance of the volunteers of the Olympic Games.

It is an Olympic tradition for organizing committees to use volunteers, partly for budgetary reasons but more importantly to allow people in the host community to feel they are participating in and contributing to the Games. Volunteers can provide help to the athletes, the visitors, and the spectators and will play an important role in achieving a successful Olympic Games. They want their city to host the “best Games ever” and to share their culture, their hospitality and their pride with the world. The success of the Olympic Games was due to all 47,000 volunteers at Sydney, all 45,000 volunteers at Athens . Beijing is expected to use a volunteer work force of about 70,000 individuals.

When the Games begin, the eyes of the world will turn to China . The Olympics give us the chance to show the world the development China has achieved during the past decades. Each volunteer is like a window into China . The volunteers should have the knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm to represent our city, our nation and the Olympic Movement in the best possible way.

Every Chinese can be a volunteer, no matter how old you are and what job you are undertaking. When you smile at others, when you are ready to offer help and when you try to be polite spectators, the whole world can feel a civilized and friendly China . We are expecting 2008 Olympic Games will be the bridge of civilization , communication and friendship of all the peace-loving people in the world.

The smile of the volunteers is the best name card of Beijing . Let us smile from now, not just for 2008, but for our bright and prosperous future.

Thank you.
